The natural structure of propolis is resinous and waxy, which makes it indigestable for humans. Extraction process is a neccessity in order to obtain bioactive compounds of propolis. Ethanolic maceration is one of the most employed methods for propolis extraction. However, this method has some shortcomings, such as solvent residue, dark coloration, and a lenghty process. To eliminate these shortcomings, new and environmentally friendly technologies are also employed. Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction is one such method. This method has been increasingly employed in recent years. This review highlights properties, advantages, and disadvantages of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction.
